Called To Greatness!

by Dong Sarmiento on Dec.02, 2008, under Features

God is great beyond measure! As one encounters God, one cannot help but ascribe to Him the greatness He so richly deserves. King David, the great man of God, could not contain his awe of God when he said these words:

Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one  can fathom. – Ps 145:3

“The temple I am going to build will be great, because our God is greater than all other gods. – 2 Chron 2:5

As His followers, we too have been called by God to a life of greatness. When God called Abraham, God revealed that greatness was part of God’s plan for us. He said,

“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”  – Gen. 12:2-3

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the believers in Galatia, declares that we too are part of God’s plan for Abraham and his people. Paul pens these words to the Galatians:

He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. – Gal 3:14

We, though gentiles, are part of God’s plan and calling for greatness:

GCJ  Is  Called To Be A  Great  Church  For  Jesus !

How do we pursue greatness? We ask ourselves what God considers great, and then do them, because great people do great things. So what does God consider as great?

1. Greatest Commandments:

Matt 22:36-40 – “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’   38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’   40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

2. Greatest In God’s Kingdom: Servant.

Matt 20:25-28 - Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave- 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

3. Great Commission.

Matt 28:18-20 – Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Our Purpose As A Church Is To:

Joyfully Obey the Greatest Commandments, Humbly Serve Others, and Passionately Pursue The Great Commission.

We want to simplify our church in such a way that Our Purpose will also be Our Process! It is my prayer to see every one of us to walk through this four-stage-process in order to be faithful to our purpose:

We Worship! (Greatest Commandment)

Every member is encouraged and enabled to love God with their whole being.

We Relate! (2nd Greatest Commandment)

As each member is saturated with God’s love, their love for God will be expressed through loving and relating deeply with others.

We Serve! (Greatest In God’s Kingdom)

We can serve without loving but we can not love without serving. Our love for others will eventually compel us to put the other’s interest ahead of our own,  and in all humility, move us to serve them.

We Reach Out! (Great Commission)

The ultimate form of love is to share the best news one can ever share. If we truly care for others, then we need to proclaim the Gospel to them and walk along side them as they walk through the same Process.

As God unites us with His love and as He empowers us by His Spirit, let us pursue this call to greatness and live out the life we were meant to live.
